Strathallan dominates in inter-school equestrian

Congratulations to the ACG Strathallan Eventing Team who took out first place at the annual Secondary Schools Equestrian Horse Trials at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo.

Six riders represented Strathallan at the event – A division: Molly O’Leary, Lara Butler Gallie, Imogen Kendall and Kayla Sinclair. Daniel Smith and Charlotte Guy competed in the B division as part of a composite team.

The pressure was on as the school has won this trophy four times in the past five years and the team was keen to see it return.

Annie Styles, ACG Strathallan equestrian coach, gives a run-down of the day.

“The event started well with all four riders performing good dressage tests to sit in first place after this phase. The riders all show jumped clear, which extended our lead going into the all- important cross country phase on the Sunday morning. The girls went out and got the job done on the cross country, with three clear rounds from Molly, Lara and Imogen. An unfortunate run out for Kayla saw her collect 20 penalties, in an otherwise good round.

It was a nervous wait for the final scores to be posted (the best three scores count), and we were delighted to come out the winners ahead of St Kent’s combined 2nd, Auckland Diocesan 3rd and Waikato Diocesan 4th.

Our two younger riders also acquitted themselves well all weekend gaining invaluable experience for the future.

Overall it was a fantastic weekend with the riders showing great sportsmanship and team spirit. The parents helped out and Strathallan really stood out, once again, as the team to beat in inter-school equestrian.”

Congratulations, team!
